He's ready to learn to sound out words.
This tin can exist tough!

I created this activity without an expectation that my son would exist ready for it. Imagine my surprise when it was just the affair he needed to become sounding out to "click!" Woo hoo!
UPDATE: This word building activity give reading practice with analytic phonics. Analytic phonics is when y'all use known words or word parts (such as word families) as analogies for figuring out words. Many children do very well with analytic phonics pedagogy. However, as I larn more than about the science of reading, I now prefer to start with synthetic phonics education. You can larn more about that in this video web log post.
To play, simply print the word building mat and a fix of cards and pictures. Each folio in the download has five pictures and v first letters or blends for a particular word family.
Help your child read the name of the word family. "Aaaad. Advertizement." Next, he puts it in the red box (see in a higher place).
Have your child choose a letter, put it in the left box, and read the new word. "Ssss…advertisement. Sssaaad. Sad."
Finally, he finds the picture that goes with the word and places information technology on the bottom sign.
When done, your kid can identify the alphabetic character and picture in ii piles higher up the mat. Then he starts over with a new word.
When you're washed with i word family, attempt some other i.
My son did actually well with the short a and brusk o word families. When I pulled out the short i word families, he quickly became frustrated. Nosotros put the activeness aside for the twenty-four hours, simply I'm looking forward to trying it again when he's prepare.
Tips for preparing and using this printable
- Laminate for durability. (This is our favorite abode laminator.)
- Later you lot laminate each page, cut apart the letter cards and pictures. Bind each set together with a rubber ring, and store all the sets in a quart or gallon size freezer bag.
- Depending on your child's ability, practise just a few sets at a time. If you sense frustration, be conscientious not to push too difficult. Stop early if necessary.
- Get-go with the easiest discussion families. In my experience, kids learn discussion families all-time in this club: short a, brusque o, short i, short eastward, and short u.
- When your kid can build the words on the mat quite hands, set the mat and pictures aside. Pull out a word family set and build a word, such equally "cat." Quickly place a new letter of the alphabet card at the offset of the word ending. How quickly tin your kid read bat, hat, and thousandat?
- Effort some of my other early reading printables to help your child grasp "sounding it out." Browse my free printables page or purchase package packs pictured at the end of this post.
