Beavis and Butt-Caput is an American adult blithe television series created by Mike Judge.[2] The series follows the eponymous Beavis and Butt-Head, both voiced past Estimate, a pair of teenage slackers characterized by their apathy, lack of intelligence, lowbrow humor, and failure to attract women.

The characters originated in Estimate's 1992 brusque film Frog Baseball, which was broadcast by MTV'south animation showcase Liquid Television. Subsequently MTV commissioned a full series around the characters, Beavis and Butt-Head ran for seven seasons from March 8, 1993, to November 28, 1997.[3] [4] The series was revived with an 8th season airing on MTV from October 27, 2011, to December 29, 2011, but was cancelled a second time following the season's conclusion. A 2nd revival consisting of two seasons is scheduled to release on Paramount+.[v] [6]

During its initial run, Beavis and Butt-Head received widespread disquisitional acclaim for its satirical, scathing commentary on order. The show's popularity spawned various related media, including the theatrical moving picture Beavis and Butt-Head Do America in 1996. A 2nd movie has likewise been appear to be released in July 2022 on Paramount+.[7]

Premise [edit]

The serial centers on two unintelligent teenage delinquent couch potatoes named Beavis and Butt-Head (both voiced by Judge) who lack social skills. They nourish school at Highland High in a town named Highland, located somewhere in Texas or New Mexico. If they are non at schoolhouse or out causing mayhem, they at home watching Goggle box, looking at pornographic magazines, or eating nachos and other junk food. Beavis and Butt-Head take little to no adult supervision and are barely literate. Both lack any empathy or moral scruples even when regarding each other, and have no hesitance to inflict serious physical harm to each other. They volition usually deem an experience "absurd" if it somehow involves heavy metallic, violence, sexual activity, devastation, or the macabre. While inexperienced with women, they share an obsession with sex and tend to chortle whenever they hear words or phrases that could be fifty-fifty vaguely interpreted equally sexual or scatological. Butt-Head tends to be very emotionless and lackadaisical with regard to his carry, whereas Beavis tends to be more "over-the-top" and extroverted (he is too shown to exist somewhat more aware of social norms and certain morals than Barrel-Head is, though Butt-Caput seems to be somewhat more intelligent at reading and planning ahead).

Each episode features frequent interstitial scenes in which they critique music videos using commentary improvised by Estimate (much in the same way as Mystery Science Theater 3000; in flavour viii, they likewise commented on clips from other MTV shows such as Jersey Shore and True Life, plus shows from other Viacom-owned networks such as Fasten). The remainder of the episodes depict the duo embarking on various schemes or adventures.[8] [9] The staff at Highland High are often at a loss every bit to how to deal with them, and, in many episodes, Beavis and Butt-Caput skip school altogether. Their actions sometimes consequence in serious consequences (sometimes for themselves but often for others), for which they themselves practice not express whatsoever remorse due to being too stupid to understand that their actions take caused serious problems.

Episodes [edit]

Reception [edit]

Beavis and Butt-Head are so stupid and sublimely self-absorbed that the exterior world has little reality except as an annoyance or distraction. It would be easy to attack B&B as ignorant, vulgar, depraved, repulsive slobs. Of course they are. But that would miss the bespeak, which is that Mike Judge's characters reflect parts of the gild that produced them. To study B&B is to larn about a culture of narcissism, alienation, functional illiteracy, instant gratification and tv zombiehood.

— Roger Ebert (1996)[ten]

Over its run, Beavis and Butt-Head received both positive and negative reactions from the public with its combination of lewd humor and implied criticism of society.[11] It became the focus of criticism from some social critics such as Michael Medved, while others such equally David Letterman and the National Review defended information technology every bit a cleverly subversive vehicle for social criticism and a particularly creative and intelligent comedy. Either way, the testify captured the attention of many immature television set viewers and is frequently considered a classic slice of 1990s youth civilization and Generation Ten. Trey Parker and Matt Stone, creators of South Park, cite the series as an influence and compared it to the blues.[12]

In 1997, Dan Tobin of The Boston Phoenix commented on the serial' sense of humor, saying it transformed "stupidity into a cause, forcing u.s. to admit how petty it really takes to make united states of america laugh."[13] In 1997, Ted Drozdowski of The Boston Phoenix described the 1997 Beavis and Barrel-Head state as "reduced to self-parody of their cocky-parody."[14] In December 2005, Tv set Guide ranked the duo's distinct laughing at #66 on their listing of the 100 Greatest TV Quotes and Catchphrases.[15] In 2012, TV Guide ranked Beavis and Barrel-Caput as i of the top 60 Greatest TV Cartoons of All Fourth dimension.[16]

Mike Guess himself is highly critical of the animation and quality of earlier episodes, in detail the start two—"Requite Blood/Claret Drive" and "Door to Door"—which he described every bit "awful, I don't know why anybody liked it... I was burial my head in the sand."[17]

Controversy [edit]

The show was blamed for the death of two-yr-old Jessica Matthews in Moraine, Ohio, in October 1993. The girl's five-year-old brother, Austin Messner, set up fire to his mother's mobile home with a cigarette lighter, killing the two-yr-old.[eighteen] The mother afterwards claimed that her son watched an episode in which the characters said "fire was fun".[eighteen] However, the neighbors stated that the family unit did non even have cable idiot box and would thus be unable to view the show.[19] [20]

Equally a result, all references to fire were removed from subsequent airings and prompted the prove to a later fourth dimension slot.[21] The creators found a censorship loophole and took please in sometimes making Beavis scream things that sounded very like to his previous "Fire! Fire!" (such as "Fryer! Fryer!" when he and Barrel-Caput are working the tardily shift at Burger World) and also having him almost say the forbidden word (such as 1 fourth dimension when he sang "Liar, liar, pants on..." and pausing before "burn down"). There was besides a music video where a man runs on fire in boring movement ("California" past Wax). Beavis is hypnotized by it and tin barely say "burn down". However, MTV somewhen removed the episode entirely. References to fire were cutting from before episodes—fifty-fifty the original chief tapes were altered permanently.[22] Other episodes MTV opted non to rerun included "Stewart's Firm" and "Way Downwards Mexico Mode". Copies of early episodes with the controversial content intact are rare, and the copies that exist are made from domicile video recordings of the original broadcasts, typically on VCR. In an interview included with the Mike Judge Collection DVD set, Estimate said he is uncertain whether some of the before episodes still exist in their original, uncensored course.[21]

When the series returned in 2011, MTV allowed Beavis to use the discussion "fire" over again uncensored.[23] During the starting time video segment, "Werewolves of Highland", the first new episode of the revival, Beavis utters the word "fire" a total of seven times within 28 seconds, with Butt-Head maxim it once every bit well.[24]

In February 1994, watchdog group Morality in Media claimed that the death of viii-month-one-time Natalia Rivera, struck by a bowling ball thrown from an overpass onto a highway in Jersey City, New Jersey, nigh the Holland Tunnel by 18-twelvemonth-old Calvin J. Settle, was partially inspired by Beavis and Barrel-Head.[25] The group said that Settle was influenced by the episode "Ball Breakers", in which Beavis and Butt-Caput load a bowling ball with explosives and drop information technology from a rooftop.[25] While Morality in Media claimed that the show inspired Settle'due south actions, the case'southward prosecutors did not. It was later revealed by both prosecutors and the defendant that Settle did not accept cable Television receiver, nor did he watch the evidence.

In "Lightning Strikes", the show parodies the want to arraign things on youth culture. When a reporter asks the duo why they had been flight a kite in a thunderstorm, they explicate that they had been inspired by a documentary about "some old dude with long hair and glasses". The interview continues until they mention having watched rock music videos before in the day; the reporter concludes (on the air) that the videos are to blame for their deportment.

MTV as well responded by broadcasting the program after 11:00 p.m. and included a disclaimer, reminding viewers:

Beavis and Butt-Head are not existent. They are stupid cartoon people completely fabricated upward by this Texas guy whom we hardly even know. Beavis and Butt-Caput are dumb, crude, thoughtless, ugly, sexist, cocky-destructive fools. Just for some reason, the fiddling wienerheads make us laugh.

This was later changed to:

Beavis and Butt-Head are not part models. They're non even man. They're cartoons. Some of the things they practice would crusade a person to get injure, expelled, arrested, possibly deported. To put it another way: don't try this at dwelling.

This disclaimer also appears before the opening of their Sega Genesis and Super NES games every bit well as their Windows game Beavis and Butt-Head in Virtual Stupidity.[26]

They were famously lambasted by Democratic Southward Carolina Senator Fritz Hollings as "Buffcoat and Beaver".[27] This subsequently became a running gag on the bear witness where adults mispronounced their names. For instance, ane character on the show, Tom Anderson, originally chosen them "Butthole" and "Joe" and believed the two to exist of Asian ethnicity (describing them to the constabulary as "Oriental"). In afterward episodes, Anderson uses the Hollings mispronunciation in one case and, on at least one occasion, refers to them every bit "Penis and Barrel-Munch". President Clinton chosen them "Beavis and Bum-caput" in "Citizen Barrel-head", every bit well as in the flick, where an old lady (voiced by Cloris Leachman) consistently calls them "Travis" and "Bob-head". In "Incognito", when some other student threatens to kill them, the duo uses this to their advantage, pretending to be exchange students named "Crevis and Hurl-Head". The peachy, seeing through the disguises, calls them "Beaver and Barrel-Plug". In "Right On!", when the duo announced on the Gus Baker Prove, host Gus Bakery (a caricature of Rush Limbaugh) introduces them as "Beavis and Buffcoat".

Beavis and Barrel-Head take been compared to idiot savants because of their creative and subversively intelligent observations of music videos. This function of the bear witness was mostly improvised past Mike Gauge. With regard to criticisms of the ii every bit "idiots", Approximate responded that a testify virtually straight-A students would not be funny.

Films [edit]

Beavis and Butt-Caput Do America (1996) [edit]

In 1996, a total-length film featuring the duo titled Beavis and Butt-Head Do America was released in theaters by Paramount Pictures. The motion-picture show features the voices of Bruce Willis, Demi Moore, Cloris Leachman, Robert Stack, Eric Bogosian, Richard Linklater, Greg Kinnear (in an uncredited role) and David Letterman (credited as Earl Hofert). Information technology gained generally positive reviews from flick critics and a "two thumbs upwardly" from Siskel and Ebert. The motion picture earned over $sixty million at the domestic box office, a strong render for a motion picture that cost only $12 million to produce.[28]

Beavis and Butt-Head Do the Universe (2022) [edit]

In 2008, Judge stated, "I like to keep the door open on Beavis and Butt-Head, because information technology's my favorite matter that I've always washed. It's the affair I'thousand most proud of."[29] Still, he stated his reservations regarding the "year and half [to] ii and a half years" that information technology would take "to practise that right," saying that a revival project "comes up every three years."[29] In 2009, while promoting his film Extract, Guess said he would like to see the characters on the big screen once again, and that "I kind of call up of them as existence either 15 or in their 60s.... I wouldn't heed doing something with them as these two muddied old men sitting on the couch."[30]

In March 2018, Gauge told Rotten Tomatoes that the idea of doing a second Beavis and Butt-Head pic had been brought up ii months prior, maxim "Information technology's simply a matter of coming up with an idea that feels like it's worth doing."[31] In July 2019, Judge again reiterated involvement in a potential motion picture, stating, "I've got some ideas. I retrieve it would have to be something that makes it relevant today. I call back I might've figured out a way to practice that." He further stated that he would probably direct it.[32] [33]

On February 24, 2021, the Paramount+ streaming service announced a new movie based on the series.[7]

In February 2022, it was announced that the picture show volition be released in July 2022 and would be titled Beavis and Butt-Caput Do the Universe.

Possible live-action film [edit]

In May 2008, Approximate stated that he previously hated the idea of producing a live-activity movie, but had come to believe that "perhaps there'south something in that location."[34] He also revealed that Johnny Depp had expressed involvement in the role of Beavis, having imitated the character while Marlon Brando imitated Butt-Head during the production of Don Juan DeMarco (1995).[34] He also stated in an interview that "Seann William Scott'southward kinda got Butt-Head optics."[35]

In 2016, Judge told Radio Times "Peradventure it could be a live-activeness someday", then went on to speculate that Beavis might be homeless past now.[36]

MTV Classic [edit]

On July 28, 2016, information technology was reported that VH1 Archetype was to be rebranded as MTV Classic on August 1, 2016 on the 35th anniversary of the original MTV. With a focus on 1990s programming, Beavis and Butt-Head were a major function of this alongside Daria and Ɔon Flux at the launch; they were also a major focus in the promotion of the re-brand.[37] MTV Classic only broadcast episodes from the 2011 reboot. However, it and all non-music video programming only lasted a few months before existence pulled.[38]

Revivals [edit]

First revival [edit]

On July 14, 2010, a spokesperson for MTV Networks informed a New York Post reporter that Mike Judge was creating a new Beavis and Barrel-Head series, that Estimate would reprise his vocalization-interim roles for the show, and that the animation would be hand-drawn. According to TMZ, MTV had not asked Tracy Grandstaff to reprise her role as Daria Morgendorffer.[39] After, in a Rolling Stone interview, Judge was asked if Daria was coming back, and he said: "No. There's sort of a cameo in one episode. That'll be a surprise."[23]

As in the onetime series, Beavis and Butt-Head are high school students who, among other things, criticize contemporary music videos.[twoscore] In an interview with Rolling Stone, MTV president Van Toffler said the duo will as well watch Jersey Shore, Ultimate Fighting Championship matches, and amateur videos from YouTube, equally well as give movie reviews. "The biggest change is manifestly the references are updated, it's ready in modern twenty-four hours, and there's going to be a moving-picture show review segment," Linn said, "Otherwise they're still true to their prior passions."[41] [42]

John Altschuler, formerly a writer for Male monarch of the Hill, told a Rolling Stone reporter that he saw signs that Mike Approximate was thinking of reviving Beavis and Barrel-Head. On more one occasion, Judge told the writers that one of their ideas for an episode of King of the Hill would work well for Beavis and Butt-Head; somewhen he concluded, "Perhaps we should only actually make some practiced Beavis and Barrel-Head episodes." Afterwards, a Lady Gaga video convinced Van Toffler of the tenability of a Beavis and Barrel-Head revival: "I felt similar there was a whole crop of new artists—and what the world sorely missed was the point of view that just Beavis and Butt-Head could bring."[41]

As office of a promotional campaign for the new serial, cinemas screening Jackass 3D opened the characteristic film with a 3-D Beavis and Barrel-Caput short field of study. Months subsequently, in a media presentation on Feb two, 2011, MTV announced that the serial would premiere in mid-2011. On July 21, 2011, Mike Judge spoke and fielded questions on a panel at Comic-Con International. A preview of the episode "Holy Cornholio" was too shown.[43] Guess told Rolling Rock that at least 24 episodes (12 one-half-60 minutes programs) volition definitely air.[23] It was initially rumored that Judge was working on 30 new episodes for the network.[44]

The new episodes debuted in the United States and Canada on October 27, 2011. The premiere was dubbed a ratings hitting with an audience of 3.3 million total viewers.[45] This number somewhen dwindled to 900,000 by the flavor'due south end, mainly due to its challenging time slot pitted against regular prime time shows on other networks.[46] From April 24, 2012, to May i, 2013, the show remained on the bubble for renewal, with no official decision being made.[47] According to Mike Judge, MTV'southward modern demographic are females 12–14 years one-time, and the network is looking for other networks to ship the show to.[48]

The principal title card displays the title equally Mike Judge's Beavis and Butt-Head with Judge'southward name replacing the MTV logo.

Comedy Fundamental aired the prove as part of their animation cake over Christmas in December 2011 but was not picked upwards for a new flavor or syndication. This would exist the second time the bear witness aired on Comedy Key, the first beingness between subsequent airings in 2004 and 2005.[49]

Second revival [edit]

On January 10, 2014, Mike Estimate announced that, while he is busy working on Silicon Valley, there is a take chances of his pitching Beavis and Butt-Head to some other network and that he would not mind making more episodes.[fifty] While giving an interview to Howard Stern on May 6, 2014, Estimate mentioned that the bear witness'due south ratings on MTV were 2nd only to Jersey Shore, but the evidence did non fit MTV'south target demographic of young women, which is why the revived series has not been brought dorsum on MTV. He also said that MTV was close to selling it to another network, simply it became "lost in bargain stuff".[51] : 37m

On July i, 2020, Comedy Central appear it had ordered a 2d revival of the serial consisting of two new seasons along with spin-offs and specials. In the new series, Beavis and Barrel-Head will enter a "whole new Gen Z world" with meta-themes that are said to exist relatable to both new fans who may exist unfamiliar with the original series and old.[5] Mike Judge will return as the author, producer and voice player for the series.[52]

On January 4, 2022, Estimate tweeted the first textile from the new show, drawings of older versions of Beavis and Barrel-Caput.[53] In February 2022, it was announced that the revival would instead premiere on Paramount+, post-obit Do the Universe 's July premiere.[54]
